Pumpkin Makeover DIY: Don't Toss Those Old Faux Pumpkins!

Pumpkin Makeover DIY: Don't Toss Those Old Faux Pumpkins!

It’s that time of year again! Last weekend, we finally pulled out our fall decorations from the attic, and let’s just say, they’ve seen better days—especially those faux pumpkins! The paint was chipped, and some of the foam was peeking through. I bet you’ve got a few decorations like that too, right?

My first thought was to just toss them and buy new ones, but then an idea hit me. Last Christmas, I did a little DIY on our front door, giving it a faux wood look with gel stain, and it turned out amazing. I even did the same to our garage doors because I loved it so much! So, why not try that technique on these tired-looking pumpkins and give them a whole new life?

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Minwax Gel Stain (I used Chestnut finish)
  • A cheap paintbrush (you won’t be keeping this one!)
  • Gloves (trust me, you’ll want these)
  • Metallic gold paint (for a little pop of glam, but optional)
  • A small paintbrush (this one you can clean and keep)
  • Old faux pumpkins (the ones that need some love)

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start by wiping the pumpkins down with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt.
  2. Dip your brush lightly into the gel stain and apply it in long, downward strokes from the stem to the bottom. Don’t worry about making it perfect! The streaks will give it that textured wood look.
  3. Let the pumpkins dry for at least 24 hours.
  4. Optional: Add a touch of metallic gold to the stems for a little extra flair!

Quick Tips:

  • My pumpkins were white, and I loved how the gel stain looked over the white base, but if you want a more natural wood look, you could paint them a light tan before adding the stain.
  • If you accidentally get stain on your nails or hands (been there!), olive oil works wonders for getting it off.

I hope this little DIY inspires you to give your old pumpkins a second chance! You’ll be able to enjoy them for years to come, and they’ll look so chic with your fall decor. Plus, who doesn’t love a good upcycle project? Let me know if you give it a try!
